Mangaone Benedicts' Ball
The return ball (plain and fancy dress), given by the benedicts to the bachelors, which Came off in the Hall last night, was, as usual, a thorough success. There were not quite as many people present as had been expected, still there was quite enough to make the dancing comfortable, about 40 couples occupying the floor, including visitors from Feilding, Taonui, j and Palmerston. The room was very prettily decorated with ferns, nikau, flags of all nations, Chinese lanterns, &c, and reflected great credit on the committee of the ball. Although not many were in fancy dresses, those who did appear in costume looked both novel and picturesque. The following characters were represented : — Miss Stewart, Italian Peasant Girl; Miss Sissy Mexted, Good Luck; Miss Tidswell, Neapolitan Fishwife ; Mr J. Entwisle, Bandmaster ; Mr D. Clark, Sailor Boy; Mr Pike, Spanish Picadore; Mr F. Keen, Yankee; Mr C. Miller, Cricketer ; Mr J. Lynch, Jockey; and Mr J. Fraser, Bunthorne. Mr Haybittle's string band supplied the music, which was of the highest order. Mr A. Adsett acted as M.C. in a very efficient manner. Supper was laid out on the stage, and it certainly was a great improvement on the old style of carrying refreshments around the room to the guests. During the evening songs wcro sung by Mrs Oliver, Mr Keen, Mr Adsett, Mr Donnelly, and Mr PJeasants and in each instance they were enthusiastically applauded. A jig by Mr Donnelly, and the sword dance by Messrs Pleasants and Thomson was also well received. The arrangements were certainly superior to any previous efforts in Mangaone.
