TO THE EDIOT OF THE STAR.

By tbe last issue of the Star I see that Mr S. J. Thompson has decided to take the initiative in a very praiseworthy movement, namely, closing at 9 o'clock on Saturday night instead of 10. I hope Mr Thompson will be heartily supported by every right-thinking person in the district, as well as the co-operation of hi 9 fellow tradesmen. If those people who are in the habit of putting off their shopping to the last moment would ask themselves how they would like so many hours work I do not think they would be against early closing. The public are the great turning point in all social movements, and if they wish to aid any good cause they can easily do it without any inconvenience. This concession to the tradesmen and their employes would not be the cause of loss or sacrifice to anyone, asa little forethought is ail that is required. With r tference to my last communication, I notice that Mr Thompson took exception to its wording. I think he will admit that nothing short of the solid truth m plain langimge will touch the conscience of some people. While I admire the stand Mr Thompson has taken I may state that I did not expect anyone to put the cap on unless it would fit. I hope the public will remember the hour of closing froru Saturday next has been altered and do their shopping early. — I am, &«•> Vigilance.
