SHOP HOURS.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR. Sir, I notice by your issue on Saturday last that Mr 6. J. Thompson intends closing his establishment at 9 p.m. on Sat urday evenings. What, I ask, has prompted Mr Thompson .to this act of would-be generosity towards his employ es ? I say would be, for lam sure it is a concession not at all devoutly to be wished i<r, either by his, orany other employes. Of what benefit is it closing a shop at 9 p.m. It is then too late to siart a iy social, ment il, or phys cal enjoyment. No sir, the night is spoilt for rjcreation after 8 p.m.ispas f , and it is then immaterial whetuer you work until 9 or 10 pm. Sunday mornings you are allowed a little more latitude than on other mornings and if y,ou do not reach your home until say even 11 p.m. on Saturday it is not necessary tor you to rise until 8.30 a.m. on Sunday. I am afraid it is not a wish to shorten the hours of labour that has induced Mr Thompson to close at 9 pm. Is not this the gentleman (the only one in Feilding) who positively refused to give us the half- holiday in Feilding, a measure which is admitted not only by the employ £s to be actually ntossary, but by all the leading citizens of the town as a document now in existence fully signed will testify. Sir, we do not want the 9 p.m. concession, but, in the interests of our physical recreation our kitchen, and flower gardens and the him Ired and one etcteras of our cottage homes, we do want the half-holiday on Wednesday. Hoping the Clergyman, the Mayor and Borough Councillors, as it is to their interests to have a happy and contented people in their charge, will take the matter up, and secure tins boon so urgently needed by both employer and employed. — I am, &Ci, A Shopman.
