Lambs Dying
In our last issue we gave an ex- j planaticm from the Wool Grower to account i!or the peculiar deaths that -occurred iv fine grown healthy lambs. Since that has appeared we had a cunirdrsation witu a practical she p farmer -who disposed vt that explanation in a summary maßner by describing it as " fudge. " He then gave his view which seems a very probable one. When lambs have reached a month or two old and a>e haai-ty and strong, they make a very vigorous rush at the mother for a suck, and if the wool is allowed to grow near the teats, they irequently, in their hurry, pull sonn off in their mouth and swallow it, and in its progress between the two stomachs gels blocked, and kills the lamb. An examination will very soon •*show if this is correct. • Our informant r-- stated that no such deaths occurred where the ewes had been well breeched, and that every sheepfarmer should, not later than two months before lambing commences, take the precaution to get his ewes iD, and cut the wool away from between the hind ; legs and the udder. Thjs is a hint that is w- 11 wor h bearing in miud.— Manawatu Herald.
