Feilding Fire Brigade

. — «. The competition, for the medal presented by Lieutenant Shearer took place on Saturday afternoon in the Corporation paddock, and was witnessed by a large number of spectators. Captain Morey and Lieutenant Shearer superintended operations, Fire Inspector Carthew assisting. Considerable interest was evinced by the competitors themselves, each one evidently intending to do his level best for the first position. Firoine 1 Bartholomew, Collins, and Kitchen competed. It will be remembered that the latter won the medal (with ease) at the late Brigade exhibition on the Oyal. Doubtless this victory deterred some from taking part in this contest, but the result shows that perfection is to be attained by anyone who is willing to practice and perseveie. The rules of the competition haye already been published. Fireman Kitchen took the lead and went through without a hitch, time 51 f sec. Fireman Collins, 53f sec and 2 sec. added for fines. Fireman Bartholomew, 54f sec. A protest was lodged against Fireman Kitchen on the ground of his wearing canvas shoes instead of ordinary boots, after rectifying this irregularity he went through it again in S4f sec, making a tie with Fireman Bartholomew, it was then agreed to take a final test between these two, which resulted as follows : —Fireman Bartholomew, 55 1-5 sec and 1 sec added for a fine, Fireman Kitchen, 53 1-5 sec, the latter thus proving the winner of the medal by 3 sec. This medal is to be wou twice in succession or three times at mtervals, before it becomes tiie absolute property of the winner.
