Volunteer Items
Non-commissioned officers and members of the Mane i ester Rifles, having books of Drill Instruction are requested to hand them into Color Sergt. Eilderbeck as soon as possible. They will be re-issued again as soon as marked. It has been recommended that the New Zealand Volunteers should be armed with the Manlicher Rifle, and smokeless powder. Candidates desiring to join the Manchester Rifles are requested to send in their names to the Secretary, Color Sergt. Bilderbeck, not later than Thursday the Bth instant at 7 p.m. Those who are accepted will be sworn in after the parade on that night. A specimen of the new Khakee uniform will be shown at the next parade of the corps. The new clothing is a light drab color, with maroon-coloured facings. For practical work, as the color corresponds with that of the hillsides, it should be extremely useful in rendering the troops almost invisible, but it is presumed that the defence authorities, having taking one practical step, will not halt there, but give the Volunteers the modern arms and smokeless powder.
