Luxford, of Awapuni, has imported from Dunedin a herd of pure bred Ayrshire cattle. Paeloff, leader of the Baptists, sentenced to four years' banishment to Si« beria, has received a second term for re- j fusing to abstain from preaching. The organs of the Italian Government unanimously support the proposed increase of taxation by £200,000 for war purposes. Pierce Lauigan, contractor of Auckland, has filed his schedule. The secured debts are £7568, and the unsecured about £4000. Captain Edwin telegraphs : — Weather forecast for 24 hours from 9 a.m. to-day — Warnings for easterly gales and rain hold good at all places. Four or five teams composed of members of the Feildmg Fire Brigade, will start practice on Monday next, for the Christchurch competition. Mr Birfcs is advertised to conduct the services in the Primitive Methodist Church to-morrow morning and evening at the usual hours. He will also preach at Mangaone at 3 p.m. The committee of the Feilding Jockey Club met on Thursday night, when a considerable amount of useful work was done. The programme for the Christmas races was adopted and will be published in a few days. Howe, member for Bourke (New South Wales) has been arrested for obtaining, by fraudulent pretences, £690 in his capacity as Director of the Australian Guarantee Bank. He has been bailed out for £3000. Mr Donnelly has been hard at work preparing new fittings for his yery commodious billiardroom, getting ready for the summer months, and his advertisement, giving full particulars, will appear shortly. The Melbourne Argus in a long article on the Brj cc episode attributes the blame to the Speaker, and declares that had he shown firmness in dealing with the question of privilege the whole affair would haye been avoided. A few days ago, at Awahuri, when Mrs Wilcocks, accompanied by her daughters, was driving home, her horse bolted and the trap was upset, the occupants being thrown out on the road. They were not much hurt, but the trap was smashed and the horse was so badly injured it had to be destroyed. The Ijadies' of the Sewing Bee connected with the Wesleyan Church, have engaged the Assembly Booms for Prince of Wales' Birthday. A gift sale of farm produce and other goods will be held in the afternoon, followed by a tea meeting, and in the evening there will be a concert and entertainment; All particulars will be duly advertised. » The efforts of the supporters of General Boulauger to prevent the production of "Lohengrin" in Pans Theatres were extremely violent. The audience received the opera with enthusiasm, and outside the theatre a great crowd collected and made insulting references to the Emperor William's speech, and hissed the audience. Eleven hundred persons were temporarily taken into custody. It was reported to the Presbytery at its meeting in Wanganui on Wednesday last that the Presbyterian pupils attending the Girls' College were allowed to attend their own place of worship on Sunday mornings, but were compelled to attend the Episcopal Church in the evening. The Revs. Doull and Gordon were appointed a deputation to interview the Board of Governors on the matter. Cobbe and Darragh appear to be making preparation for a big increase of trade m their new brick store, now nearly com* pleted. We noticed yesterday, outside their premises, a number of cases of drapery, imported by them direct from London. They propose givipg special attention to the Irish linen trade, and we learn they have a large shipment of these noted g ods at present en route from Belfast. A match for a private bet betweenJMr Benson's Hermit (by Tamatea), and Mr Ridley's grey gelding, took place on the old racecourse on Thursday morning last. The distance was 6 furlongs on the flat, and Hermit earned 81bs in excess of his opponent's weight. Mr Lovejoy piloted Mr Ridley's gelding, and Mr A. Gregory rode Hermit. Hermit won easily by four or five lengths. A fair number of spectators were present, and considerable interest was evinced in the race. Consequent upon the success which attended the initial celebration of the hal f holiday movement at Palmerston on Wednesday, Mr Park informs the Manawatu Times that he intends making representations to the Railway Department with a view to obtaining, during summer months, fortnightly or monthly, whichever is most suitable, excursion trains to various places along the line. Should he be successful in bis endeavours many pleasant trips may be anticipated. The total expenses on harbor defences up to the 31st March, 1891, together with the liabilities to that date, amount to in round numbers, £475,000, of whioh- £240,---000 represents cost of material of war from England, and miscellaneous charges connected therewith, and £285,000 the cost of works in the colony. Of this latter sum about £36,500 represents cost of land, and the balance, £198,500, the cost of forts, batteries, submarine defence and steam launches, reports of Royal Engineer officers, engineering supervision and all other charges. .Regarding the expenditure of last year, £8000 was voted for war material from Eagland, and other charges which cannot be brought against the vote for prison labor and material, of which £2477 5s 3d was expended. The sum of £8320 10s lOd was* expended on works, out of a total amount voted of £10,000. The total liabilities on the 31sfe March j was £5581, and the assets are valued at f £10,000. ! £
