Fire on Kimbolton Road

Yeßterday morning about 12.40- a fire- ' broke* out in the flaxmill' of Mr J. Bartholmew r in Kimbolton road, The firebeli was xuag: by the uight-watohraan andi the Fire Brigade, under the command of; : Lieutenant Nearer, (Captain Morey was? away in Pafiaaers'ton), were promptly on.. the spot -with.- fbe fire engine. Although.' the water supply was somewhat defieienkyet the efforts of the Brigade, assistecLby the public, were able to confine the fire* to the old engine shed, and its contents; . which were destroyed, and to saye the adjacent offices and buildings. The loss i& estimated by . Mr Bartbolmew at from? £250 to £300, of which not a farthing; : was covered by insurance. As to the origin of the fire, it is conjectured thatsome tramp was making his bed among- - the hay,- of which several tons were stored in the shed, and m lighting a match set fire either to the hay or tixe debris 'of- flax which was lying about. Our sympathies are with Mr Bartholmew in his loss, more especially as he had taken every possible .' precaution to guard against fire. In our advertising- columns Mr Bartholmew tenders his thanks to those who so readily came to his assistance.
