A roessa c was received from the Legislative Council disagreeing with the amend meDts made in the Legislative Council Bill by the House of liepre scntatives The .Premier moved the appointment of tho Hon Mr Furgus, the Hon Mr Seddoa, and himself as managers, to draw up reasons for such disagreement, j which was agreed to on the .-voices Subsequently, the reasons for disagreement was brought before the House, and were ordered to transmitted to the Legis latire Council. The House then went into committee on the Public Trust Office Acts Amend ■ raent Bill. The amendments made by the Public Accounts Committee in clause 11 as to the rate of interest to be allowed to estates were negatived by 40 to 21, nnd it was finally agreed the rates should he 5 per cent on> amount* up to L3OOO, and 4 per cent over that sutn In com mi 'tee on the Stamp A.ct Amendment B il. the Premier moved an ad lition to clause 2. enabling steamboat companies to compound for the yearly stamp duty on pa?.sen?er tickets sold over L 2. Mr W. Hutchison moved to strike out the clause relating to the totalisator tar. After a lengthy debate the amendment was lost by 39 to 16 and (he clause as it .stool was agreed to. The House then went into committee n Pnytnent of Members Bill. The Premier said Ll5O was a reasonable salary for Legislative Councillors,, seeing that their duties were by no means s> arduous as those of members of the House of Representatives The clause was then carried, providing that the salary should be L 240 for 'members of this House and Ll5O for Legislative Councillors. Smith, Ward Noes, 24 — Messrs Blake, Buchanan, Buelriand, Duncan, Dufhie, Hall, HoasJ. Kelly. Lawry, V. McKenzie. McGuire. Meredith., J. Mills, Mitchelson, Moore, Newman. Rhodes, Rolleston, Russell. Swan, Tanner, R. Thompson, T. Thompson. J. W. Thomson Clause 9, providing that payments should not ->c anticipated, pledged, nor seized in execution was struck out on the voices s ; The Bill was eventually read a third ime and passed. Fbidat, September 11. The Public Accounts Committee re« ported on the Hon. Dr Pollen's claim for arrears of retiring allowance to the effect that they saw no reason for altering the report they had formerly furnished on tli»» on«»stion, nnmply, that the sum of £1385 15s be paid to the petitioner in satisfaction of iuis claim, and that the report be referred to the Government for considerationAfter a long debate the motion referring the report to the Government was carried by 27 to 21. On the motion that the House go into Committee of Supply, Mr Mitchels'>n spoke at some length in criticism of the Public Wo ks Statement, As to the North Island Main Trun't Railway, he thought the prosecution of this work at Wellington end would be of immense value to the colony.
