Manchester Road Board

From Lands and Survey ' Department, "Wellington,, re portion of Railway Reserve, Taonui, declared to be a public xoad, and favouring proclamation of the same. From-Thomas Thompson, asking permission to erect two gates at each end of his section, on the Watershed road. From F. '.Frederick, re alteration of same on fate roll. From R. Durie, re construction of a level crossing, on the railway at Aorangi. From Carl Voss and two others, drawing attention to the state of Paschke road. From Peter Christian, Jensen Bros., .Ashurst, request for transfer of slaughterhouse license. From W. A. Sandilands, stating that the necessary- notices had -been issued in reference to the bridge oyer the Orotia* ' From W. Harvey, re change of name on rate roll. From W. J Hastings and others, petition in connection with Hendersons road. From the Bank of Australasia, asking the Board to pass a resolution giving the chairman power to. apply for. a limit of advance to £2000. • From Charles Carr, re change of name on rate roll. GENERAL. ■<■ Proposed by Mr Reeves, seconded by Mr Purkiss,' : That Mr Thompson be allowed to. erect two gates as requested by him, provided the settlers around do not object, such gates to be removed at once on notice being given by the Board. — Carried. - Proposed by Mr Downes, and seconded ly Mr Pearce, That the Board supply two men to fill, and spread gravel on Forlong's also pay half-time to fill in ruts on ' liver flat asked for by Bailey Bros-—Car-ried. Proposed by Mr Purkiss, seconded by Mr Downes, That the Halcombe Town Board's offer, of 5s per 100, for 1000 feet of bridge decking on Mangaone road be accepted. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Pearce, seconded by, Mr Downed That the name of Charles Carr be placed on the rate roll for section H,.«ibaivision G, Manchester Block, instead of John Murphy.— Carried. - Proposed by Mr Wheeler, seconded by Mr Purkiss, That the Chairman apply to ' the bank for a limit advance of £2000 for .March 31, 1892 ; also, that the Board undertake to pay the bank interest as agreed upon, such charge of interest to be retrospective and to apply to future accomrno-oration.—-Carried. The question of doctor's charges in connection with cases coming under the Charitable Aid Board was under discussion and the opinion was generally agreed that the charges in these" cases should be on a reduced scale. Notice- of motion : — That on and after October 31, the Clerk be instructed to sue for all outstanding rates. Proposed by Mr Reeves, seconded by Mr Downes, That this Board, after hearing Mr Pearce's report re damage to Mr .Allerby's horse, agree to pay the £3 as compensation claimed by him. — Carried. The; subject of the Manawatu Gorge xoad then, came up for discussion. The Chairman stated that he had, since last meeting, of the Board, hsid an interView with Mr Bolton, chairman of the Pahiatua County Council, on the matter of the Manawatu Corge tollß. He had pointed -out that the Fitzherbert Road Board' had threatened to erect a toll between the two present toll gates if they were compelled to pay a share of the maintenance, and this would be the means r o£ causing sheep to be forwarded ly train, and his argument was that it ■would. bebetter for one body to have sole cpntrpl# the road and collect tolls. The chaitman suggested that enquires should l£ made as. to the probable cost of keeping the road in repair. Proposed by Mr Reeves, seconded by Mr Downes, That before this Board decide won j any fresh arrangement in re-; iardto" the Gorge road and bridges, the Bbard ascertain the probable cost of maintenance, amount of toll collected and liabilities of 4ocafc bodies Interested in fcbe maintenance of the road in case, of any deficiency or destruction of either principal bridge, and that the Chairman obtain the required information. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Reeves, seconded by Mr Dowses, That the tenders of Mr McCoU for > the footpaths, &c., Po'iangina I "road : ; Mr^oley^for Stamford street ; Mr ' : Hanlon, for delivery: of metal for No. 6 -ward; F. Behrent, for Knorpp street and TTounger and Laing, tor Stanway road be accepted, and that the Board's funds will not admit of the acceptance of any tenders for Penelope road. — Carried. The usual accounts were passed for jaymeat and the meeting adjourned.
