Mr Carthew's usual monthly cases pf books and periodicals arrived to-day. We learn from Napier that Dr Von Mirbach has issued writs against the Waipawa Mail for alleged libel. The population of Canada shows an in* crease of ll£ per cent on the whole, but the maritime provinces have remained stationary. The Pahiatua Star states that a new Government township called Tutaekara, about six miles south of Pahiatua, on the main road, will be :|6ld shortly. We learn from the Standard that Mr Kenneth Wilson, M.A., formerly of Wellington College, is about to open a school ! for higher education in Palmerston North. At tbe Christchurch Resident Magistrate Ciurt yesterday, Thomas: Reap, licensee of the Junction Hotel, was fined £5 and cpsts for serving liquor to an intoxicated person. Mr Wilson is moving for a. return showing what the banks in New Zealand paid last year under the Property -tax and what they will pay under the proposed income tax. The price of bread in Wellington will be raised one half -penny per loa fon and after Monday next. This is the natural outcome of the extraordinary increase in the value of wheat. j Another batch of ferrets (210 ia number) have been liberated in Masterton. No doubt when these animals get sihort of food they will follow in the' foots teps of the weasels, and visit these parts. A firm of burglars have started in Christchurch and, according to ilie local papers, they are doing a good a rtd safe business. They confine their operations to the annexation of food, and aire said to be very chpice in their selections. The United Hunt Club will not be> able to have the anticipated run with, the hounds on Saturday next, because of the impossibility which exists of a line, being obtained through suitable country;, owing to the lambing of the flocks. The Belgian Government has issned an order forbidding all freight traffic on the State railroads on Sundays and the ? jreat festival days. On those days no j>*oods are to be received, except perish -able articles, which are to be conveyed by fast trains. Nominations for the vacancies in. the Borough Council must be handed in to the Town Clerk before noon on Mo nday next. The following candidates we hear havealready been nominated : Mem irs F. Y. Lethbridge, G. W. Fowles, W. Car thew, and J. C. Thompson. The Russell Prospecting Coim-pany have discovered a find of autimony, which has been traced^ for over a mile. They have taken up the claim and. paid tbe Warden £60 for the same- The specimens are good. They purpose* getting out five tons for treatment.
At the annual meeting of the IF ox ton Racing Club, the Manawatu Heralid reports, it was decided to hold an annual dinner after the general meeting of the club. Mr J. R, Russell was appointed to act as secretary of the club until the return of Mr F. G. Andrews from England. We hear there is a new combiln-ation formed in the House, designated the " Wash-house Party," composed, pretsumably, of members who do tbeir own -washing on the premises. Of course it -would be out of keeping for any membors of "The great Labor Party" to employ a laundress. The authorities in Auckland are vigorously enforcing the attendance of children of school age at tbe public scfiool. A solicitor "vas arrested on Saturday on a warrant of commitment for 14 <3ays in default of payment of a fine oii £2, for not sending his son to school wben ordered. -Auckland Herald. The Scotch census returns issued on June 19th show the total popui ation of Scotland, including the shipping in Scotch waters, to be 4,033,103 persons, o f whom 1,951,461 are males and 2,08 1,642 females These numbers, when compared wich the year 1881, show an increase of 297,531, the male increase being 151,986 and tbe Eemale 145,544. The Pahiatua correspondent of the Examiner supplies the following: — Mr F. Kopke'a second daughter died to-day from blood poisoning. On Friday last she had used a common brass pin for the very ordinary purpose of pricking a pimple. Eiysipela** and blood-poisoning were developed in a few hours with the result stated. Decease 1 was 16 years of age. It is interesting to note that on the evening following their ball, several of the firemen, under the command of Lieut. Shearer, attended the usual practice. The engine was taken into the square and, after a dry practice, some of the men went through the routine of the " One Man Competition " as practice for the forthcoming contest, in very good time, and any fireman wishing to make a gooi show at the competition will find it absolutely necessary to work up for the occasion.
At the R.M. Court yesterday two women, mother and daughter, were brought up, charged with drunkenness and disorderly conduct, on Thursday last, Mrs A. Dogherty, who had on the same day been fined 20s and costs for the same offeuc9, was charged before Dr Monckton, J. P., with the offence as'above, and fined 40s and costs 9s 6d, or in default seven days' imprisonment. Mr J. C. Thompson then took his seat on the Bench, and the mother, Mrs Lowe, was also charged for the same offence and fined 20s and 8s costs, or in default 48 hours' imprisonment. Tbe delinquents asked for time, but as there were no extenuating circumstances the Bench refused to allow it. j The fines were j>aid' '
The Junior Cup match Feildiug II v. Awahuri was played at tbe latter place this afternoon. The juice of hajf a lemon in a teacup of strong black coffee, without sugar, will often cure a sick headache.
The boys attending the Bulls State School met the boys of tbe Feilding School on the oval this afternoon. A lamb was born (dead) at Waituna a few days ago with three hind legs, four front legs, two breast bones, and one head. The ball committee of the Feilding Fire Brigade return tbeir sincere thanks to the ladies wbo contributed towards the supper. Captain Edwin telegraphs :— Weather forecast for 24 hours from 9 a.m. to- dayWarnings for easterly gales and rain have been sent to all places. - It is rumoured that the wife of. wellknown Palmerston gentleman has left her husband and gone to Nelson as a Seventh Day Adventist missionary, because he j would not keep the Sabbath on Saturday. At the Thames, a little lad, about 7 years of age. mimed Donnelly, was playing with a detonating cap, when it suddenly exploded, an<t resulted in the little fellow's hand being blown off from the wri>t, with the exception of the little finger. The flesh and sinews about the wrist were also terribly torn, while his fece was slightly cut in two or three places.
The members of the Opposition have been trying to prevail on tbe Hon Mr Bryce to return to his seat in the House and to his position as leader of the Opposition. We understand, boweyer, tbat in spite of their efforts, Mr Bryce feels so strongly what he deems the unmerited censure of the House that he absolutely refuses to have anything more to do with politics, and wilL he declares, retire for tbe future into private life. — N.Z.
