The Feilding Star. SATURDAY, AUGUST 29, 1891.
It is a grave misfortune to tbe colony that the gentleman who now occupies the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives should not be the possessor of those special qualifications which are requisite and necessary for the maintenance of due order and decorum, and to command the respect of the whole of the members, over whom it is bis province to preside. The N.Z. Times, a warm supporter of the party to whom Major Stewart is indebted for placing him in the chair, in commenting on the unhappy scene of accusation and recrimination which took place on Thursday, between the present and the ex-Minister for Lands, on the subject of the leasing of certain pastoral runs, says : ** Had the Speaker, when Hansard was being irriegularly quoted, promptly exercised his authority, tbe whole melancholy business would have been preyented." This is a bold implication of weakness on the part of the Speaker and could not haye been made unless perfectly justified by the circumstances of the case.
