Fire Brigade Ball
1 The above ball was held in the Assembly Rooms on Thursday evening last, and Was a brilliant success. The officers and -Jmembers of the Feilding Fire Brigade deserve the highest credit for the most ad/Xmrable manner in which the arrangements for the ball were made and carried ottt. The Assembly Eoom ps very tasteftllly decorated with flags, festoons and evergreens, and was well lighted. The floor was as smooth as glass, in grand condition for dancing. For the convenience of visitors and spectators, the was comfortably fitted "up with seats, which were all well filled. The music was everything that could be desired and everyone gladly admitted that the Feilding String Band, Tinder the able leadership of Mr R. F. Haybittle, was an admirable institution. The supper, was "certainly provided on the most. liberal 'scale, and everything- was supplied in the' way of comestibles that could be required by tbe most fastidious. Mr R. Soinerville was an excellent Mast- ter of Ceremonies, and he performed his somewhat difficult task with a knowledge and tact that showed he was familiar with the duties of the position.' Dancing commenced about nine o'clock, and was ■kept up until an early hour on the following morning. During the interval, when the gentlemen were at the supper table, Captain Morey proposed the healths of the visitors who represented the Fire %. Brigades of the neighboring townships, and this was responded to by Mr Gibbons, of Marton, and Mr Hogg, of Wanaanui. Mr Gibbons' proposed -tbe toast of Captain. Morey, "of the Feilding Brigade,' to which Captain Morey briefly, Trat ' '.gratefully, responded, Foreman proposed the press, to which Mr Kirton, on behalf of the J Star, .responded in - suitable terms. We ihay state that the visitors were -highly pleased with the hearty welcome accorded them. We regret' that we were "uuable to' obtain a list of the several •characters represented, for publication, " 'hecause the several ladies and gentlemen liad not been requested to leave their •cards' with lhe required information with the doorkeeper. However, we may say -that there were Greeks, Albanians. Firexaen. Volunteers, Comanche Indian Fire-queens, Footballers, Geutlemen in evening dress, The' Terror, Ger •man Peasant Girl, Bushman, Tipperary -Joe, Jockeys, Ballarat Digger, ' Feildiug Star,'-' ' Chambermaid, Australian Native Tracker, The Dowager Duchess of D<-v nshire? The '-STouug Dowager, Beauty of ' the Period, Spanish Matador, Gentlemen of the reign of Charles IE, Naval Officer, ' Man-o-'war's-man. The scene wben the Twhole of the characters were eagaged in dancing, was certainly the most bnlliant ever 'witnessed in • Feilding. and we only express the desire of everyone who •was there,' when we ' hope the E'eilding Pire .Brigade Ball will be established as a Tegular annual institution.
