Accidents and Fatalities
' (per united press association.) Pabis, August. 21. Further information confirms the great j destruction to property and loss of life by the hurricane at Martinique, a French colony in the West Indies. Two hundred and eighteen people were killed and 200 injured by falling houses, trees, &c. The devastation is fearful. Washington, August 21. By an explosion of powder in the Black Bear Mine, Burke, Idaho, eight men were blown to atoms. Chbistchubch, August 22. A shocking accident occurred here this morning, A horse attached to a buggy belonging to a well-known doctor was left standing in the street and ran away. It came through the busiest part of th 6 city and knocked down an elderly woman at the corner of High and Lichfield streets, killing her almost instantaneously. The woman's name is unknown. The shock freed the horse from the buggy. Gisborne, This Day. A man named Tarn Walker was killed in the bush yesterday. A tree, which his mate was felling, fell on top of Walker, crushing his chest, breaking his back and both of his arms. Death was instantaneous. Auckland, August 24. A young man named James McMillan was walking with a companion along an embackinent at Opua, near Russell, when he suddenly jumped over into the sea and started swimming off the shore. A lad named William Murdoch, jumped into the water with all bib clothes on, and erentually brought McMillan safely ashore. McMillan after being resuscitated states that he has no recollection of having been in the water. Wiliiam Woolley, who resides in Melton Avenue, Mount Eden, had a narrow escape from being shot on Saturday evening. About 5 o'clock Mr Woolley was going up Melton Avenue and was near the residence of Mr Thompson, M.H.R., when he was struck on the left shoulder by a ricochet rifle bullet, but the bullet was almost spent. During the Saturday afternoon some firing was proceeding at Mount Eden rifle range by two volunteer rifle corps, and it is thought the bullet ricocheted from a boulder about the target.
