Parkes for a copy of the proceedings at the Federation Conference, and a photograph of the Premiers of the various colonies which he caused to be sent to Her Majesty. In connection with the derelict sighted by the hrignntine Emma L. Shaw, it is mentioned that a large ship, called the <. ainperdocvn, left Capetown in ballast a year ago, and has never been heard of si'-ce, Melbourne, August 3, The township of Walhalla, 120 miles east of Melbourne, ia submerged with water, chiefly from the melting snow on the ranges. Several bridges have been swept away, and two men were drowned. Two others are believed to have perished in a land-slip, and it is feared that more fatalities will be reported. Heavy rams have caused floods in Ballarat and Gippsland, and railway traffic has been interrupted. This Day. The names of the men drowned" at Walhalla are Whitelaw, surveyor, and Gordon, his assistant. The men who perished in the land-slip were two named I Lemra and Mohr. All the mined are j riooded out, and damage done to the ex-
tent of thousands. There is a great flood in the Werribee river. Two men, Biggs and McLennan, were drowned. Nearly five inches of rain fell in the Baccarat district in 86 hours. Serf and Fernaado have been scratched for the Caulfield Cup. HOBABT, August 1. The Bank of Van Dieinan's Land, Limited, suspended payment this morning, and its £ 1 notes are selliug at 17s cad . Its position is believed to have been brought about by recent advances against scrip. One result of the collapse is that several of the ZeeUan silver mines will cease work at once.

Two tribes of blacks came to blows m the streets in Cooktown. The police quelled the affray, but not ,till one black had been speared in the thigh, and another hamstrung.
