"THE FI.RST STAG HUNT IN THE COLONY. TO THK. EJif'loJC <>F THK STAR, g IB( _I vvas delighted in perusing the columns of your interesting and popular paper, last Tuesday, to had a paragraph referring to the " first stag hunt of the colony," pronouncing it to be an utter failure. Why cannot the United Hunt Club be content to go on with their idiotic "drag" hunts, together with the chance of getting on the track of some more fortunate hare, which generally manages to escape these mongrel hounds. J ask any of the members of the Hunt Club if there is any honour or even any sport in procuring by boat from Nelson, a timid little stag, drawing it to the place of action in a cart, and setting it free a short time before the appointed time for the commencement of the hunt, in country entirely new to it. I call it a disgrace to the United Hunt Club,, one of the cruellest and most barbarous cases that has been before the public for some time. Where is this noble society for " Prevention of cruelty to animals "? It is only to be hoped that other men who have any feeling at all will follow the splendid example set by our noble Governor, by leaving the promoters of wanton cruelty like this to their own devices. If such things as these are permitted in the colony the S.P.C.A. better leave us, for they are no good here. I can only express an earnest hope that this is the " first and the last attempt at a stag hunt in the colony" under such circumstances as those recorded. Hoping I have not trespassed too far on your valuable space. — I am, &c, An Old Fox- Hunter.
