The Agent-Generalship
The following letter appeared in the Manawatu Times of Tuesday :— • " Sir. — As the Agent-General is coining back to this Colony, and^as nothing has been said- about his suc«essor, I w.ould suggest that as Mr Macarthur is likely to go Home, that ,he be requested to accept this office. Mr Macarthur has shown, by his ad- . ministration of the Feilding Corporation affairs, that he is quite capable of fulfilling the duties of the Agent- . Oenerai although minus the brass collar. I know objections * will be raised to .this appointment because Mr .Macarthur "belongs to the opposi tion party, but I would remind those • who may be inclined to take an opposite view from mine, and would like to see a . follower ' of the present -Government appointed, that all the .good men on the Liberal side will be /required in the Colony for the next "few years .to come. It would, therefore, show great magnanimity on the part of the Government and their followers to appoiut Mr Macarthur as Agent-General for the * Colony. I am. &c., Elector, Fahiatua, July 25." " '
