THE SERMONS OF MR GRANT. TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR. Sir,— ln reply to " 8.J.8." on this subject I am glad to see that his protest is not actuated by any feeling of disrespect or animosity to Mr Grant. Anyone acquainted with Mr Grant must know it is ■ only by pract sing self-deuial that he is able to devote the necessary time to the • preparations of his sermons. Perhaps this is one reason why he has the respect i and esteem of the congregations who \ have the pleasure and profit of listening to his discourses. I can assure " 8.J.8." ; that not in the slightest degree has Mr • Grant prompted or inspired the com- : municationa which have appeared in the ! columns of the Star from time to time, '. and which I have reason to believe have •; been appreciated by many of its readers. ; I cannot think any ordinary newspaper would exclude secular subjects from its : pages, else why not refuse advertissi ments pertaining to tbe same ? I beI liiive the press would be acting more in ■ accordance with its principles — wbich principles include a tendency to slevate . the public sentiment — if it imbibed a little more of genuine religion, of which " do as ; you would be done by " forms a part. Taking it for granted that the Feilding Star is not strictly confined to secular subjects, other readers who bold different opinions to " 8.J.8." might, with equal right, ask that the betting news be omitted, and which occupies so prominent a place in every ordinary paper ; a 1 as, such items as " Shocking Crime in Kentucky," and others of a similar nature, which constantly find space in the columns of the colonial press. There is sufficient reason to protest against this kind of pubulum. — I am, &c, J.B.
