All the afternoon was taken up in con« sidering local Bills. -* «*fe Sir George Grey moved the second reading of the Law Practitioners Bill, which was agreed to after a short discussion, in which Messrs Hut&ison (Dunedin), Bees, Smith (New Plymouth,), and Rhodes took part ; the first three "supporting the measure and the last opposing it. , rh~ * Mr G. Hutchison (Waifcotara) moved the seconding treading of "the' Private Schools Bill, v _j» E j. - Mr- Buiok, thought that every denomination should have -the fright to .maintain its own schools,,, -and receive a grant where there was an average, attendance of sixty children. He 'should support the Bill. Mr Perceval admitted that the majority of members Were agains^ the -Bill, but they ought to give their reasons for such opposition. It was idle to -imagine.that Catholics would ever fell in with the present system of education, as it was against their conoience. j ' The Hon. Mr Beeves' said he could not support the Bill, because it would lead to a degeneration of the national system of the education of the people of the colony. He did not think there was any danger of the Private Schools. Bill passing, but once they knew there wa3 a chance of it becoming law they would rise en masse against it. \ The Hon. Mr Ballance supported the .second reading, as it appeared to him that' the passing of the Bill would not pre- ' . judice or impair the present schoolsystem. Replying to questions it .was stated— That a few small defalcations have been discovered in the Government Insurance Department. ' ' The Hon Mr Ballance pointed out that the distribution, of the Government ac- , counts amongst the banks of the colony would have to be done by a resolution of the House. The motion was agreed to. The' Hon Mr Ballance moved the second reading of the Local Authorities Accounts and Audit Bill, to provide foV the keeping and auditing the accounts of the local authorities. .The Bill was referred to the Public Accounts Committee.
