Ashurst Notes

(from our own correspondent.) There is considerable improvement being effected in the country about 14 or 15 miles from Ashurst. Several intending purchasers have been up the Pohangina lately. I find that the fame of our rich valley is being trumpeted far and wide, and those that come to see admit that the country is quite as good as the report given. Mr Oorpe's saw-mill on the Awahou Foxton Block is cutting for quite a number of local orders up the river. No doubt the cost of carting up from the Ashurst mill has deterred many from building, but they can now be supplied at a reasonable price. It has just dawned on a brickmaker that it would be a good idea to make bricks in that part, instead of carting up from Ashurst, he has accordingly started work at Peep o' Day. There are a number of small runs fronting the Pohangina which were all taken up about 12 months ago — lease with a purchasing clause. The Government proposals to withdraw the right of purchase, are making these runs quite valuable ; the selector of one of about 900 acres, could make £500 on his bargain if he chose. So determined are people to get a piece of land on which they can acquire the freehold. I drew your attention some time since to the use to which potatoes might be put now that they are so cheap. A farmer here who has been feeding a cow on i them reports that the cream is much thicker, and also an increase of 1-5 in the weekly return of butter. And he also has the satisfaction of seeing the cow enjoy her new feed as she never did anything before.
