j (OUB OWN COItREBPONI>ENT.] > The heavy timber traffic now being ' brought on to the-'Pohangina road is tel--t ling a tale on that part which goes over ' I the old swamp in the Harbor Board Block. ' " Very soft at .bottom, like a lady's heart it • ■ yields to pressure. Our. goods shed is of yery great benefit to us. Timber, firewood and other exports are sent off every day. The quantlty of stores, wire, &c, imported is also considerable, but, it must be cleared at once, not safe to leave for a single night. ' The other day a keg of nails was opened, ' I have also heard of other purloinings. There is surely traffic enough to warrant' ' the .Railway Department m placing someone in charge. A thousand years ago ixx\ King Alfred' 8 days we are told that jewellery could be safely left in the highways ! of Old, England. ' We /boast of our ad- ' vancement in civilization, etc., But could ' we do that? „ . , '- - Messrs Mountfort and Retemeyer have • an orchard of about 2,000 - young fruit trees planted in a sheltered nook, in ous of the banks of the Pohangma. There am ether very good orchards up that. .way. ~ . i There is a good future for fruit growers. I am informed by letter from England that, the arrival of the first consignment of N.Z. apples created quite a sensation in Covent garden. Tasmanian apples were also in in great demand then and selling at 4d each. Our trade with England is capable of great expansion. AIL honor to those who are trying to draw u» closer together both commercially .and nationally. It is to be hoped that these continuous frosts will destroy the- aphis blight, (to some extent at least) on the fruit trees. It was always noticed on the other side of - the world that there was more yermin da fruit trees and m general farm crops after a mild winter than after a hard one. Ona of the simplest ways is to throw -the earth away from the stem and expose the roots*
