Notes by Crackshot. Colonel Gorton's gelding, Yardman, by Don Juan — Mab (half brother 'to Oeo) has been disposed of' to Auckland sport (a patron of Williamson's stable) for £75. This horse has been running this season* with a lot of bad luck, and although he has always been handy at the finish, not a single race has been decided in his favour. -Yardman, however^ possesses a good deal of pace, and will be heard of to advantage later on, but I haye graye doubts as to bis staying abilities in a" fast run race. , > , - I hear from a. private source, that the committee of the Feildmg J. 0, some time back voted about £30 to top -dress their racing track, but so far there are no signs of this urgent work' being . started. The track is very lumpy, and the holes require^ "filling" in as soon' as" possible,* so that the new grass when sown will have? time to mature before being raced on next December. A rumour is current that an attemptis to be made to rescind , the resoiution're granting this £30, but I hope this rumour has no foundation. The course sadly needs top dressing, and the money would be judiciously spent in completing such a boon to owners of horses. I would adyise the members of the 'committee to pay a visit of inspection to the course, and see for themselves whether the track is in a fit coudition to race. on. ...>.' a .' Pyramus is the only horse at present in training here, and he has, been, given V lot of long work this week with a view to his Wanganui engagetneuts.' " The course being 90 heavy, fast work haa been impossible, and I do not expect to see him strip at bis best on Monday, although I will term him "dangerous." I understaud this handsome sou of Natator'is to be put at the " illegitimate " business after the Wanganui meeting, and I think he will distinguish himself at that as weli as he has done at the ' ' legitimate." [Pyramus left by the mail tram to-day to fulfil engagements] The steeplechase meeting of the Wanganui J.C. comes off on Monday next, and has every appearance of developing into a successful gathering. If the pace is at all fas| *n the cross-country events, no doubt the majority . of the competitors will emulate the Egmont performance, and kiss mother earth in preference to finishing in their respective races. My selections for the day are : — Flying Stakes — Torpedo, 1 ; Pyramus, 2; St. Malo, 3. Wanganui Steeplechase — Whalebone, 1 ; Takaptt 2 ; Ingorani, ■or Bere, 3. (Matchless to win if he gets over his fences). - Hunters' Steeplechase — Yardman, 1 ; Piako, 2 ; Batu, 3. Winter Oats— St.' Malo, 1; Pyramus, 2 ; Weka, 3, Trial— Christmas, 1 ; Ridge, 2. Hack Flat— Viola 11., 1 ; Hiamoe, 2 ; Strike or Despised, 3. The Horowhenua racing club hold their meeting on Monday,' when I think Roger will appropriate the Hurdles, Omaha the Stewards Stakes, and Lodore the Cup. ■
