Accidents and Fatalities
On Thursday a young man named E. G. Pearce, an employe of Messrs Managh and Co., sawrnillers, of Halcombe, was driving a five horse dray on the Makino road. It appears that one of the wheels went over the side of a cutting, and to avert an accident, Pearce, who was riding on top of the load, attempted to turn the horses by his yoice, but unfortunately this made the position worse, the reins being made fast to the breeching, the dray turned completely over, with Pearce underneath the load. Assistance was soon at hand, but when the dray and timber were removed, Pearce was discovered unconscious. Dr Johnston was sent for, and found on his arrival life was extinct, the Doctor being of opinion that Due poor fellow could not have lived many minutes from the nature and extent of ihe injuries he had sustained. The deceased was only twenty-seven years of age, and leaves a wife and three children to mourn the untimely end of an afreet .onate husband and kind father. The horses were a good deal hurt and one of them, having a leg broken, was afterwards destroyed.
