APITI SCHOOL COMMITTEE ELECTION.
TO THE liDI TOR OF THE STAR. Sir,— One would think some terrible crime had been committed at the election of the Sohool Committe at Apiti by the remark in " Householder's " letter which appeared in the Star on the 30th April. I He says one householder proposed six J persons, himself included. One would think he was committing some terrible crime, and so he was, according to the views of " Householder," because they were the members of the old committee, and he was not one of them. He says he fails to see how they can be considered elected, especially as four of them were not at the meeting; but they had consented to stand, if elected, and the householders present were so satisfied with what they had done in the past, that no one would oppose them. He says, according to the Act a meeting of the committee should have been held immediately after the election. The Education Act of 1877 says " At its first meeting, or as soon thereafter, as conveniently may be, it shall elect, by a majority of the votes of the members present thereat, one of its body to be Chairman until the next election of the school committee," so that it is not a criminal offence in not holding the meeting at once. " Householder " says that the whole affair was bungled up from beginning to end. I expect that he was not able to borrow his neighbor's paper with the notice of the meeting in, and the Chairman never went to tell him, and as he did not know he thinks no one else did, and so the whole affair was bungled. He also says it reflects anything but. credit on the gentleman who presided. May be so, according to his yiews, but different people have different ways of looking at things. I for one should do what good I could in a cause like the present, and if I could not do any good.l would keep quiet and do no harm. But I should attend the meeting, and if anything was done contrary to law I should certainly protest, and if I had to write to the papers I would certainly not be ashamed to sign my name as he is. — I am, &c, ' E. "Nix.
