The Financial Policy of the Government
Ministers-have, we are in a' position to state, determined to propose the imposition of a graduated tax upon • landed- properties, with a large exemption for improvements. Tbe \4uiiiiunt of tne .exemption is not yet; .fixed, as the calculation necessary to guide the Treasurer in his financial estimates are not yet ready. These calculations are, we understand, now •being made. It is probable that Joint Stock Companies will be taxed on their profits, -instead of upon their capital. The Government is considering the •question of proposing an income tax, and calculations are being made as a ■guide to tiuaucial results. The tax will p'ro'l>al>ly be decided upon, but nothing has as yet been fixed as to the amount of the exemption. — N Z Tiiiies. -
