I per united press association.! Brunnerton, May 5. At the public meeting called by the Mayor, regarding the Minister for Public Works stopping the Midland Railway at Lake Brunner, only 22 persons were pre sent. After discussion, a resolution was moved, " That this meeting is of opinion the Minister for Public Works and Mr Wilson should be left alone in the meantime until further information is received on the subject.'' An amendment, "That this meeting views with regret the action of the M iuister in stopping the works, and requests him to withdraw his opposition," was supported by five votes. Only ten voted for the resolution, which was carried. Seven of those present did not vote. Auckland, May 5. The boy Deverill, injured by a toy can* non, is dead. Ltttelton, May 6* Alfred Burch. aged 25, was found this morning with his throat cut. He wns suffering from erysipelas in the head. He was the fourth son of the late Captain Burch. Cheistchubch, May 6*. John Ingram, licensee of the Provincial Hotel, was fined £20 and disqualified to hold a license in future, and the license of the hotel was forfeited. The evidence showed the place was simply a brothel.
