Ashurst Notes
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Now, papa Feilding, don't again look down upon your daughter, Ashurst, who 1 lives at this end ot the Manchester Block, as if she was only just able to run alone. She is growing— and fast too. Look at this : At the last licensing election, you respected parent, polled 194 votes, and Ashur'st polled 188* Buhnythorpe 44. Quite a little bit of excitement at Mr Warne's mill. Three wild pigs, very fair specimens of the Captain Cook breed, have been rooting into the watertable of the Pohangina road. One day they came out in view of the milL Tally-ho ! Qsjiite a chase ; all were killed, A fe w days after a man came looking for. them — he was not Captain Cook. There is a gentle murmur of complaint from some of the residents in the vicinity of Hiwmui school. They are disquieted in themselves at finding they cannot use the school-room with any degree of comfort. The desks are very small, and. fastened down with screws and red tape. In the old day's here, when our school was first built, the desks were made so that they could be moved, and forms put in their places if necessary. In thinly populated places the settlers cannot hope to have any other building than the school^ room for political or local meetings, and on Sundays for public worship. It was* very great convenience here before the town wus populous enough to support a Hall; and it would also be a great boon to places like Pohangina, Hiwinui and Spur road. In these days of short allowances from the Board, the few shillings that the committees would make from.the letting of their school-room, would be very acceptable, they are tiie responsible parties to see that no damage is done. A very interesting piece of intelligence is gle nud from the London Times tbafi " L\vo Jews now own the site of tU& an.ie: tcifcy of Babylon." 2477 years ago Jbabyion conquered the Jews. Since'then,in all ages, nations have tried to stamp them out, and now Kussia is trying. The conquerors haye all disappeared in their tnrnj but the conquered remain, and some of them, as we see, own the land where once they were captives*
