Accident on the Gorge Railway
(i'KII rjVITKP PItKSS AfV.OI ATWN.) Woodville, April 29. The engine of the express train from Napier last night ran off the line about a mile in the Gorge from this end, and ran about eight chains before being stopped. The trout portion being supported by the <owcatcher sliding along the rails, the escape from accident was miraculous Just before crossing the iron bridge the engine knocked against eaoh sleeper at a distance of six inches clear of the rails, the cow-catcher alone preventing the engine from beiug carried over But for this the train would have been preeipitatod into the raviue beneath. The engine was got on the rails by jacks, but ran off again before proceeding another fifty yards. A train was despatched from Palnierston, arriving at the scene of the accident about 8.20 p.m., and took on the passengers and mails. The driviug rods were taken off the refractory engine, aud the engine and train run back to Woodville.
