Stewart, P. Stewart, G. L. Worsi'olcl and J. Weightman. A man mimed Joseph Kronast, surface work contractor under the Rannitikei County Council, was found dead in bed, yesterday morning by his wife. He leaves a large family. The cause of death was no doubt heart disease, which it is said he was subject to. The other day one of the aristocrats of tie land, whose capital and stock in trade consisted of a swag aud a vote, called on a small farmer on the Awahuri Road and asked for work. " Well," said the farmer, " This is only a small place where there is very little to do." "That just suits me," said the man, but he didn't get the job. Fact. When our friend the census collector, the one who was taken particularly for a " book fiend " went to collect the paper at the residence of a settler who is a bit of a dog fancier, he saw from the elevation of his horse's back two very open-faced bull dogs eyeing him with some suspicion. The lady of the house invited him to dismount and have a cup of tea after his ride, but he declined with thanks, saying " Madam, the pants I now wear are noi equal to the strain of those dogs," aud he rode sadly away. On Tuesday last in the afternoon, the stables belonging to Dr Monckton were burned down. The Feilding Fire Brigade turned out, but they arrived too late to save the building as the flames had a good hold before the alarm was given ; they succeeded, however, in preventing the flames from spreading to an adjoining building. The prop erty was insured for £65 in the Phoenix Office. In saving the vehicle* from the coach house, the servant girl was severly burned, but no serious results are likely to follow. Miss Campbell dis played the greatest courage and preseuee of mind, and deserves the highest com inendation for her meritorious conduct. The following are the names of the Fire Brigade who answered the roll call -. — Captain Bray, Acting- Forman Bray, Firemen Saywell, Nicholson, Collins (2), Shearer, Morey, Keen, Ranger, Cornis-h, Hodges, Wickham, T. Foster, Carthew, and S. J. Thompson. We are informed that Dr Monckton has written and forwarded a highly complimentary letter to the Brigade, and offered to give a substantial pecuniary donation should the Brigade require. In our correspondence column Captain Bray thanks the public who assisted.
