It is already strongly suspected that Mr Seddon, the Minister of Defence, contemplates calling out for muster the the whole of the men liable to servo in the Militia m order that he may know on what strength the colony may rely in the event of any disturbances in Europe. It is not possible for him to do this until the returns are made from the census papers the collection of which is just completed. We have been requested to mention who are the persons exempted by law from service, and make the following extract from the Defence Act : — The following persons shall be exempt from training and actual service in the Militia, Judges, Members of Executive Council* Members of Parliament and officers connecied therewith, li.M.'s, Telegraph officers and postmasters, mail carriers and ferrymen, Customs officers, clergymen, professors in any college or university, sheriffs and constables, mcdi cal men in practice, teachers in schools, seamen and volunteers. The following are the classes, (No 1), unmarried men between seventeen and thirty years of age (No 2), married men between seventeen and thirty years of age, and unmarried men between thirty and forty years of age, (No 3), married men between thirty and forty years of age, and unmarried men between forty and fifty-fivo years of age. We learn from the Hawera Star that Mr A. Trimble the officer m charge at present of the District Land Office, who also filled the positions of clerk of the District Court, clerk of the R.M. Court, clerk to the Reserves Trustees nml Registrar of electors, has received notice that his services are to be disposed wit;h. Mr Trimble was one of the best men in the civil service, and although we feel sorry that he should be retrenched, yet as he is clever, industrious and intelligent besides being an all round good man, his present misfortune cannot help proving a blessing to him, as ultimately he is certain to take a place in the front rank, in whatever pursuit he elects in follow.
