New Plymouth, This Day. The 1 steamer left Onehunga at 2 o'clock on Wednesday afternoon, arid crossed the Manukau bar at 4, and was due at the breakwater at 4 this morning. There were two lady arid ten gentlemen passengers, and several in the steerage. Everything went all right till about 3.30 this morning. There was a thick fog at the time which obscured the shorej produced, no doubt, by the bush fires now going on., and it was impossible to see the' length of the steamer ahead. The sea was quite smooth at t ie time with a gentle swell. Captain ]\ e^des was on the bridge at the time. The steamer suddenly struck stem on, and then swinging round with her head pointing to the south and her broadside to the land. Captain Meades and all the crew behaved splendidly. Jit was, found she had gone on the Pukitapu reef, which runs out from Wainonga Point about a mile from the shore, and about three miles south of Waitara, a little to the north of where the Rangatira went ashore in 1880. The boats were got ready at once, and attempts were then made to get the vessel off the reef, but she did not move. A kedge anchor was thrown out, and an attempt was made to get her off in that way, but it was no good. The vessel is lying on the reef a mile and a half from the beach and well within the reef. She appears to be hanging on it. As the tide recedes the "rocks can be seen around her. The steamer is | not, making water at all, and another ' attempt will be made to get. her off at I high tide at 2 o'clock. When the vessel \ struck not a sign of a rock : was seen. i ——————
