The Liberals loye the " loaves and fishes " quite as well as the Conservatives, and more so perhaps. People are always disagreeing on something and now there is a dispute as to when the twentieth century will actually begin. A Pittsburg astronomer says it •will begin on January 1, 1900. The first century does not end with the year 99, but with the. year 100; the second century therefore began with the year 101, and the twentieth century, as explained, will begin with.the year 1901. We learn from the Wellington N.Z Times that the "United Hunt" hold their first "meet" at Kilbirnie on Saturday next, at 3 p.m. A splendid run has been laid on Mr Crawford's Miramar property, where the hounds will throw ' off at 3*30. A witness in a case at Court on Thursday stated that he joined a number of friends in a game of Napoleaon, called 1 Nap ' for short. ' What is nap ?' asked the examining lawyer, whereupon tha auditors smiled. ' Well, I don't know, further than that is the name of it,' was the response. ' How do you play nap ?' asked the counsel, and the Court again smiled. ' I can't d scribe it,' said the witness. A second lawyer engaged in the case remarked that his learned friend was awfully innocent, and said he supposed they could take it for granted that the E.M. knew what the game was. His Worship's reply was inaudible, but the witness vouchsafed the information that the first man- after the dealer 'had the first show of 'making it,' and if he went three the next man could go four if his ' hand ' warranted it, and should another player have what is called a full or ' nap! hand he could 'go the whole hog.' This satisfied the Court, and the auditors came to the conclusion that there was no doubt of his having ' been there.' — Napier News. It may be smart business for a newspaper to get hold of a Cabinet secret and publish it to the world. Such things have happened in England, and the clerk or other official who has soJd information „| which should have been kept sacred has invariably* when detected,.been dismissed in disgrace* A publication of a private state matter took place this "month, for which it would be dificult to find a precedent. Two women having been sentenced to de ith in Christchurch for the murder of an infant, ministers took into con-: sideration the propriety of advising. .'his.. Excellency to commute the sentence, which was ultimately done. A week: be-, fore the case was laid before the _ Governor, ■ the Lytteltori Times announced^ that he would be advised to exercise his prerdgative in the matter, and the special information was taken up by the Press Association and published in every ."newspaper in the colony. Apart from the personal discourtesy to the Goyernor, the divulging of ministerial advice to the press or public before he has decided upon it is, a most unexampled proceeding. The singular part of the affair is ; that the paper which was favored with the. special information is one in which the of Justice has a personal interest. It is due to him that the matter should be inquired into; and the grave breach of confidence brought home to the responsible party.— TypOi Goofee and Dari-agh have purchased; much under regular price, a warehouseman's stock of Ladies' Stockings ; Men's Socks* Undershirts and Pants. The? 6 goods-, haying been bought cheap} will bfe sold cheab for Cash.— Advt:
