The Baud Contest

There was a good attendance in the Assembly Boom last night to hear the several bands , play pieces of their own selection, being the first part of the contest. The following are the names of the respective selections : — " Martha," " Escelsior," " Keinzi," " Maritana," and " Queen of Beauty." Por obvious reasons we omit the names of the bands, but we may flay that " Rienzi," " Excelsior," and ! 41 Maritana " appeared to us to make the best impression. We noticed one or two instances of the performers " reaching " for ! their notes, which showed .want of that accuracy which can only be attained by diligent practice, and another fault in which all the bands seemed to offend alike was that during the playing of the piano parts advantage was taken of the pause to drain and clear out the tubes of the instruments, and thus spoiled the effect of the whole by unnecessarily attracting attention which would otherwise have been dedevoted to the music. Mr R. F. Haybittle, at the conclusion, gave notice that the final test would be made this evening, when the judge, Mr Macintosh, would announce his decision. We would strongly urge upon- all true lovers of music to be present on this occasion, because never, since Feilding was first settled, has there been such really excellent performers, and such charming music.
