Festivities at Parihaka
According to accounts of visitors the had a real festive time at Parihaka last week, "oh the occasion of the opening of Te Whiti's new house. It is estimated that there was fully 2000 natives in the • village. on Thursday last, which day was the one on which the feast was held. Mr Butterworth, who was engaged buying •curios in 'the village, state's that the dinner served in the feasting house was on a large sc^le, the arrangements being in exact imitation of the pakehal The cooking was excellent, so say those who par--took of the food. The : Maoris sat down to dinner in bands. of 122, at eight long i tables;,. and an idea -of the quality of food that was :copked : might . be' arrived at, ■when it is stated that there were eight re-; lays, or a total of 976,, wh6 had dinner, and then there was food enough for another spread on Friday. The eight tables were laid in European fashion, and down the centre of them were placed .€pergnes filled with flowers, whilst glassware was in abundance.' The/:natives were all dressed as waiters; and attended upon the visitors in -iquite the pakeha style. * Te Whiti made a speech on Thursday, which lasted sonic considerable time- and to which the . natives listened with great attention, .
