Kiwitea Road Board

The ordinary monthly meeting of the j above Board was held on Saturday lastPresent — Messrs Taylor (Chairman), "Ward, Williamson, Lucas, Haythorne and Mills. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. From Treasury Office, forwarding a statement showing amount received by Board on account of loan to 31st January, 1891. From A, Dick, re item d 616 4s charged for laying off work. From J. Beard, with cheque for £5 12s for rates, also stating that the contractors on road had destroyed a portion of his fence, and asking the Board to see that they make the same good again. From District Land Office, re expenditure of thirds on Pakihikura road. From Secretary Charitable Aid Board, stating amount levied on Board for hospital maintenance was £20 15s lOd, and for charitable aid purposes £29 10s lid. From C. T. Bates, asking for change of names on rate roll. From J. Neiison, asking the Board to pay rates out of wages. From J. Paul, asking if there was any prospect of getting McKay's road repaired. From E. Booking, calling attention to bad state of road in front of sections 78 and 79, Mcßeth's line. From H. R. Hodge, with list of persons wishing thirds spent on Branch road. From N. Danvers, asking for payment bush felling on Whare road. From District Survey Office, stating that the sum of ±'351 was available for expenditure on Tapua road. From same, re .£2BO available for expenditure on roads to open up OrouaPohangina Block. From same, re £300 available on North Otamakapua Block. From A. J. Gibson, requesting change of names on rate roll. From Manager Eangitikei Publishing and Printing Company, requesting a share of the Board's advertising and printing. Mr J. R. Davies waited on bhe Board re repairing track leading from McKay's road, and was informed that the work required would be attended to. Mesdames Bardsley and Frieland waited on the Board with reference to some assistance being granted to the latter. It was stated that har husband had deserted her about six years ago, and left her unprovided for. She was not well enough to work for her own support. Her husband had said he would support her if she would live with him, but she could not on account of his unkindness. The Chairman informed Mrs Frieland that the Board would assist the police in endr-avor.ng to find her husband, and to have justica done in the matter, but could do nothing more in the meantime. Proposed by Mr Williamson, seconded by Mr Taylor, That the Clerk write to the Crown Lands Board accepting the expenditure referred to, and informing them on what terms. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Ward, seconded by Mr Haythorne, That the Engineer be instructed to lay off and call tenders for a road 12 feet wide from the Rangitikei to Mr Calverts; also that he employ an authorised surveyor to lay off the deviation of roaclline by Mr Bredin's — Carried. Proposed by Mr "Williamson, seconded by Mr Taylor, That the Clerk be instructed to take the necessary steps for having the balance of the loan on the old wards converted. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Williamson, seconded by Mr Ward, That the tenders accepted by the Warden and Engineer on March 9th be confirmed, viz. : for bridge on .McKay's i'oad and bridge at the entrance of Ongo Ward. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Lucas, seconded by MiMills, That the names of 11. W. Brown and O. T. Bates be placed on the roll as requested. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Haythorne, seconded by Mr Ward, That the Engineer be instructed to put on men at day work to break up the stones and clear the watertables on the Kiinbolton road within the Kimbolbon Ward. — Carried. With reference to the letter from Mr Hodge re expenditure of thirds on Branch road, the Clerk was instructed to reply to the effect that the matter was being attended to. Messrs G. Shannon, H. Stewart, G. Bailey and G. Stewart waited on the Board with a petition from 28 ratepayers of Pohangina Ward, requesting the Board to open up Barrow's road and the continuation of Taonui road for horse traffic. The Chairman said the Board could do nothing yet till the bush had been burned. Ths matter was briefly discussed, and the deputation were informed that the application would receive attention, and the Board would take steps to open up a road for the Harbor Board Block settlers as soon as the bush had been burned. Mr Marshall waited on the Board re a further expenditure on the Whare road, and after discussion he was informed that the Board would apply to the Government, asking if they would grant a further subsidy to the amount offered by the settlers. Proposed by Mr Ward, seconded by Mr Haythorne, That the Engineer be instructed to employ men at day wages to repair the East road in the Waitapu Block where it is most needed. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Lucas, seconded by MiMills, That the Secretary write to the Government, asking them if they will supplement a further sum of £60, if that is supplemented by the settlers to that amount, which they are willing to do, as the present sum is insufficient to carry the Whare road through. — Carried. Tenders were then opened for works as advertised. Proposed by Mr Ward, seconded by Mr Haythorne, That P. Richardson's tender at £380 be accepted for work Oxi the Kiinbolton road ; that of Dennis Brown at £100 for Back road, and at £47 10s for Mangapipiko road; that of Marsh and Connelly at £63 16s for Ridge and Reid's roads, and of the same at £67 14s 6d for Main Cross road. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Lucas, seconded by Mr Mills, That tenders be called for the expenditure of the thirds in the Foxton Special Settlement as approved by the Commissioner, tenders to be in by next meeting.- -Carried. Proposed by Mr Lucas, seconded by Mr Taylor, That the attention of the Minister for Lands be drawn to the fact that a chiin is not of sufficient width for road formation where the roads are laid out on the sides of steep hills, a 16-feec formation on a side cutting either covering up the fence below or slipping from above ; this Boiird being of opinion that at least a chain and a half should be allowed on a siding for road purposes, and considerable inconvenience has already occurred to this Board in consequence. — Carried. The Boar.l passed the monthly uccounts for payment and then adjourned.
