THOSE FOOTPATHS.

TO TIIK EDITOR OF TBE STAK ; SiR r — ln answer to the letter of" Property Owner in Grey street," I need not quote your report of the Borough Council meeting to. which I referred. All who read my firsfc letter were certain to have read your report. Why I mentioned certain names- was because they were part of tixe Council wlio. eouloL nofc see their way to put a culvert in the drain, which is a part of Manchester street, although the property owners agreed to do. the filling in, quite one-third, "which I think was a very good ofter to help to. make up the road. Nofc kerb and metal an almost private and very passable footpath. It is the old saying "not for the honor," but if you have "an axe to grind" go into the Borough Council. When fche ratepayers have to pay heavy damages through! an accident then I suppose the matter will be seen to; as in the case of the pit in the Makino road some years ago, when £5 spent would have saved i?4O. We have some good men in the Council, but I should like to know how many of them ever take a look round to see what is most needed, and tbe besfc way to expend our rates. I should like to see one of them, pressed for time, stuck up at the South street bridge as I was two Sundays ago, when I had drive round Queen street to regain Kimbolton road, because a lot of firewood was stuck in a hole in the bridge as a notice to go the other way. Had it been night time what then ? lam afraid that after paying damages " no funds " would haye been left for fancy footpaths. What about our overdraft afc the Bank, can we afford to lefc that stand and pay interest while we make fancy footpaths. — I am, &c, No Favor Ratepayer.
