By commuting the sentence of death : passed on the two women, Mrs FlanI nagan and her daughter, for the ' murder of the illegitimate child of the latter, the Government have performed an act of clemeucy which will meet the approval of every right thinking and feeling t>erson in the colony. The crime of these unhappy women was not one which deserved the extreme penalty of the law, and that was evidently the opinion of the Cabinet when they recommended His , Excellency the Governor to exercise ■ bis prerogative in the direction of '■ mercy.
