The Feilding Star. SATURDAY, MARCS, 7, 1891. The Railway Commissioners

For the information of our readers we quote the following from The Government Railways Act, 1887, clause 31 : — « The Commissioners shall be the authority to! decide on the position, character, and suitableness of all station^ station platforms, gate houses, station yards, sheds, piers, wharves, jetties, buildings, sidings or other works or accommodation for any purpose of the railway or the convenience of passengers or goods to be carried thereon, and required for or in connection with any railway vested in the Commissioners) or hereafter to be rested in the Commissioners, and whether such railway may be constructed by or on behalf of Her Majesty or by the Commissioners." In clause 27 it is provided that, "Nothing in Part VII of « The Public Works Act, 1882," contained shall be deemed or taken to authorise or entitle the Governor or the Minister, or any per- j son acting on behalf of the said Gov ernor or Minister, to inspect or examine, or to exercise in any manner supervision, superintendence, or control over, any of the railways vested in the Commissioners Under this Act." These clauses show clearly enough that the Commissioners need only act as seems good unto them, and they may treat with calm indifference the howl which has been raised in con nection with the Napier- Woodville line, to which reference was made by us in a former issue. At the opening of the Gorge line, which is to be celebrated on Monday next, during the inevitable speech making, we hope " oil will be poured on the troubled waters" and, by a policy of conciliation, the difficulty which is believed to exist will be either removed or "explained away."
