I PEB UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION..! Auckland. March 3. At a meeting: of the congregation of the Baptist Tabernacle. Pastor Birch's resignation was accepted. It ia understood that he will not return to Auckland. The congregation will ask the Rev. Concord, of Napier, to take charge of the church for the month of April. The newly appointed general manager of the Bank of New Zealand in this Colony, Mr W. T Holmes, arriyed from England, via Sydney, to-day by the Wairarapa. The Committee of the Amateur Athletic Association to-night decided to postpone the attempt to send a team to Knirland till the Championship Meeting of 1892. Christchuhch, March 3Mr Justice Denmston today granted a decree nisi in the divorce case, Zimmerman v. Zimmerman and Flack, which presented some curious features. Zimmerman is a farmer at Lincoln. Two months after marriage his wife went away with Flack, a farmer at Chaney r s Corner, d A month later Zimmerman came to town to seek a divorce, met in the street a man uamed Simpson, who told him he was a lawyer, and obtained £5 towards the coat' of the proceedings. Zimmerman went home, and Simpson wrote to him and got another £5. Zimmerman let the matter rest for nearly two years, when, finding nothing re- . suited from his expenditure, he cousulted a solicitor. There was no defence to the action. Hokitika, March 3. Harry Smith, a-well- known dairyman, living on the south side of the river, was foupd dead on the river bank' not far from where he landed by the ferry boat on Saturday. It is supposed he had a fit shortly after leaving the boat, and never recovered. The weather has been extremely boisterons during the last few days, and no one has gone near the spot. The same man had a fit in a boat about a month ago, but was observed and assistance procured and Smith was taken to the Hospital and recovered. Manaia, March 3 Wreckage has been found at the mouth of, the Raiokuru stream, Waimate Plains, and is said to be part of a vessels deck, masts and cordage. Timaru, March 3. Having appointed a certificated engineer, the Harbour Board to-day went out for a trial trip in the new tug Mana. A number of business men were invited to accompany them, and great tiou was expressed ' with the fine and powerful boat. She will be sent- to Lyttelton to be docked before use. Wellington. March 4. 1 Government intend to make . another attempt to codify the law. A Bill similar to that introduce I by Mr Tole in 1886 will be laid before Parliament with such modifications as are necessitated by the lapse of time. The main object is to simplify the process of law and get rid of the verbiage wh^ch disfigures so many statutes. Amongst other measures in con templation is a Bill to establish a University College in Wellington. - . . This, Day. At the Supreme Cou-t. E T. Parslow, for forgery, got three years, and George Thomas, for hurelary at Palmerston North, who pleaded guilty, received 18 months. Lyttelton, This Day. , The Canterbury Grass-seed Cleaning Company's works, Norwich Quay, were destroyed by fire. The stores were full and the men working day and night shifts. It is presumed to have originated in the engine honse. A strong north-west wind was blowing at the time. The insurance on the stock . was £'3250 in the Victoria and Sun ; the plant was insured for £300 inthe Liyerpool, London, and Globe, and was valued at £900. There were 700 ba -js of seed ready for shipment.
