Inhumanity

" Man's inhumanity to man makes countless thousands mourn," sang the poet Robert Burns. The followiug is one of the grossest instances of brutal cruelty we. hayo heard for some time.

It is contained in a telegram from Melbourne on Tuesday last :— "During the yoyage of the Hauroto from New Zealand an unmarried woman, who was a passenger, gave birth to a child. The Customs Department endeavoured to compel the Captain to enter into a bond providing against the infant becoming a burden on the colony. He declined, and it has now been decided that the Customs and Immigration Department has no power to prevent the woman being landed." This hardly needs comment. The cal lousness of the official in tbe Customs Department, who could thus look upon a poor woman in her hour of trouble, and her unfortunate offspring, as a possible " burden to the colony " is painful to imagine. We wonder if he is so innocent as to be able to "cast the first stone " at the sinner.
