The Feilding Star. THURSDAY, FEB. 26, 1891. Sir George Grey

; The return to public life by Sir ' George Grey is not likely to be very „ welcome to the Ministry, although the nominee of Mr Goldie, who has resigned his seat for Newton. If Mr Goldie desired to revenge himself on his late colleagues for some real or imaginary affront, or injury, he could not have chosen a better method. The presence of Sir George in the • House bas always been a disturbing element, and. never since the Great Pro- Consul descended into the arena of New Zealand politics, has there been such a time as the next session will offer iv the way of opportunities for the' exercise of his peculiar talents. , The mere fact of bis being the substitute for so small a personage as Mr David Goldie is not likely in any way to detract. from the influence he will certainly exercise over the Labor Representatives, who will at once range themselves under the banner of so redoubtable a leader; while the members of the Opposition will hail his return to Parliament with wicked delight, as an inevitable embarrassment to the Government. This danger has already been foreseen by ' the Ministerial party, and it is improvable that Sir George Grey will be allowed to win the seat without a contest. Two candidates have been mentioned, but neither of them would , have the slightest chance of gaining > the day agaiust the local popularity of Sir George, unless the Ministry were prepared to support an Opposition candidate, an alternative which although unpalatable, would be better for them than the election of Sir , George Grey. We confess that there is a strong element of cruelty shown in attempting to drag the veteran back to the small worries of Parliamentary life, after his being in delicate health for so long ; but still it would be too much to expect that the famous Skinfliut Goldie should show mercy or pity for any one.
