Makino School

— : -•- : The annual picnic in connection with the aboye was held on Friday last in Mr Humphrey's paddock. As" Captain Edwin had sent "warnings for northerly gales and all sorts of disagreeable things, of course the weather was really lovely. The proceedings were commenced by Mrs Holden giving out the prizes, of which one was given to every child attending the school, whether a prize-winner or not. Three hearty cheers were , given for 'the ladies and others who had devoted so much time, and taken so much trouble in raising the necessary funds by a concert, and in collecting for the prizes and picnic. Immediately afterwards an adjournment was made to the tea tables, where ample justice was done to the good things provided for the partakers, who mustered in all from three to four hundred. After tea there were, athletic sports in the way of races, jumping, and scrambles for lollies, and the usual games were indulged in until nightfall, when the younger ones retired to their respective homes completely tired but happy at having spent such airenjoyable day. The elder people then .retired to a neighboring building and had a pleasant dance. The good things for the inner man (and boy) were very kindly, supplied by settlers on the road.
