Yesterday the detectives arrested Constable Daniel Flanagan, and his wife, stationed at Adding ton, on the charge of murdering' the child whose head was found in Gloucester street. Flanagan is about 60 years of age, and has been 25 years in the police force. Lateb A peculiar story is told regarding the child murrier case, which disclosed & terrible .state of affairs. The third party proves to be a.wouiun said to be a daughter of Flanagan. Three weeks ago she was confined of a male child, which she gave out to nurse. On Monday evening she visited the nurse in company witb her brother, paid the board, and took the child away. ' On seeing the report of the discovery in the Press, they went to the nurse and asked whether she had received a visit from the police. She answered " No." They then told her to keep q*iefc , and say nothing about what they had to* inform her. They then, told her that after leaving the house at dusk they were met by three men who rushed them in. Gloucester street. They had a rope witb which the woman was tied, and the child was taken away. At the Police Court this morning Flanagan and his wife were charged nth. the murder of the infant. Inspector Fender had no hesitation in saymg that , the evidence pointed very strongly to theprisoners b'>ing implicated in the niurdpr,. particularly the female prisoner. He asked, for a remand till Wednesday next,, which wa« granted. I Wellington, January 12. Mary Jane Flanagan, the daughter of the accused, arrived in Welling by theTeAnau'on Saturday, travelling under the name of Miss Cullen, and was soon - arrested. She appeared to be very much astonished to her arrest. At tbe policestation she was taken il!. She is a woman of apparently about 28 or 30 years of age. Miss Flanagan appeared at the Police Court this morning and was remanded io> Christchurch on Wednesday.
