Correspondence

MR CHAMBERLAIN IN REPLY.

TO THE EDITOR OF THK STAJI. Sik, — I did not intend to reply to Mr Homer, but there are one or t>vo points in his letter too glaring to pass by. Ist. He states thut I have placed myself in a very awkward position by writing on subjects that I know nothing about. Now, I fail to see this, unless it is that Mr Homer thinks the small error of 8s 4d is going to turn the whole argument in his favor. Even Mr Homer might have made it if he had written a similar letter under similar circumstances. I will endeavor to show your readers that while Mr Homer's correspondence '• hath availed him nothing," mine has had the desired effect. Mr Homer has been trying to prove that the matter in question did not throw discredit on Jiim, but he has failed, inasmuch that the contractor I mentioned is willing to undertake to do a similar piece of work to that which the roadman was nearly three weeks at, on Mcßeth's Line, in four days for a wager — to any amount. Therefore, I consider that that piece of work alone proves my first charge against Mr Homer for, as yet, he has been unable to clear himself of it. I will leave you and your readers to judge which of of the two are in the most awkward position. Mr Homer's hide may be thick, but it is not so thick that he did not feel the sting of my sarcasm. Mr Homer makes a lame excuse, and refuses to go with me to sift the matter more freely, no doubt because he knows right well it would add nothing to his credit. — I am, &c, W. E. Chamberlain. ' [Mr Homer will be allowed to reply to this letter, but after that the correspondence must cease. — Ed. F.S. |
