The Clerk of the Court

Whenever our paternal Government is suffering from a " burst of economy" the Judicial Department removes the clerk of the Court from Feilding. This has happened several times, and once more we have to chronicle the fact that the gentleman who was only a few months ago appointed to the position here has been '* translated " to Palmerston North. In consequence of this the Clerk of Court at Marton, Mr Deightou, has been appointed to act in place of Mr Matravers, so that Feilding will only have a limited portion of the sei vices of the former gentleman. We urge v] on the residents to resent this flagrant wrong as they did on a former occasion and have it removed. If this district had in any way deteriorated, or business of the local court become markedly less important, we would have been the first to support the Government in their pretended econOiay ; but neither of these things have happened, because the population is continually on the increase, and the ziumber and imporcance of the civil cases to be heard at the Court have multiplied in proportion. We question very much whether one penny will be saved by this juggling economy, inasmuch that travelling and hotel expenses will, no doubt, amount to a considerable item, probably equal to the salary saved. We trust His Worship the Mayor will move in the matter at once, and promptly resent this glaring injustice to the Borough.
