EANGITIKEI EACING CLUB.
Early on New Year's morning everything appeared as if the weather was going to be favorable for the Eangitikei Racing Club's annual meeting. This tempted a large number of visitors from all parts of the Burroundmg districts, a goodly number journeying from Feilding; but just as most of them were nearing Bulls down came the rain in torrents. Some were not to be denied, and proceeded to the course, while others turned back to their homes in disgust. Anyhow, the first race was run in blinding rain, and the Stewards then wisely decided to postpone the races for an hour. As the time drew on the weather cleared up a little, and not much rain fell after the Handicap Hurdles had been run. The racing on a whole was excellent, the finishes in some of the events being very close. About 1000 persons, including a large crowd of ladies some of whom were dressed in splendid costumes, were on the ground, and one and all were as uncomfortable as they could be, what with rain and a cold wind. Most of the wins were very popular, as they should be when such sterling sportsmen as Messrs J. G. Wilson, J. Paul, D. Scott and J. Wilson get to the fore with their horses.
