The official census of the United States just laken gives the population as sixty* two and a half millions, showing an increase of over twelve millions since 1880. Manila, December 28 The Spanish troops bombarded and subdued the natives of Ponape, in the Caroline Islands, who had 32 killed. The American missionaries were removed from the island. The death is announced of Dr Heinrich Schliemann, the celebrated German archeologist and aut.ior aged 68. St Johas, December 26. The inhabitants of Newfoundland repudiate the reuewal of the modus vivendi with regard to the French shore, and de nounce Lord Kuutsford for asserting that such an arrangement will be satisfactory. Hong Kong. December 27, The steamer Shanghai has been burnt at Wu hu. a river port of China, on the river Yang^tzoKiang, and 200 Chiaeae perished in the flames.
