GENERAL ELECTIONS
The was a very little real mterest taken in this town yesterday as to the ■ ; result oi the elections. The voting a! tht) Feilding polling booth was very slack from liie time of opening until tho door wus closed at six o'clock. Only ; three hundred and seventy persous voted of which a considerable per centage were from tho couutry districts. Of oourse at the last moment a few dilatory gentlemen came in to vote — aud were equally of course — too late. Later in the evening when " the boys " could get about, more interest was taken and a considerable amount of flour was wasted by being thrown about m paper bags. Some of these, to give them weight aud force, no doubt, were mixed with gravel, and one or two persons complained bitterly of this as being brutal, but as" it was only a joke" some surprise was expressed that anyone should growl at the playfulness of the larrikin. From nine o'clock until long after miduight the railway platform, and the lobby in the post office, were crowded with men and boys, and as the results came to hand from other electorates they were cheered or hooted according to the mood of the first persen who . started the cry, whether for or against the candidate. The greatest inteiest was taken in the Rangitikei, Wanganui,, Paimerston, and Waitotara events, and when the news came in that Mr Carson was ahead iir Wanganui that gentleman received a "whole cheer" which would have been very gratifying to him had he heard it. But their high spirits received a damper when later intelligence of the victory of Mr Ballance was received. By this time all the. returns for the Rangitikei electorate were' in, except those of Apiti and Pern berton. Those to hand gave Mr Macarthur a majority of 11 at which he remained until to-day. All sorts of surmises were afloat as to what had become of " Charlie," and fears were expressed by some that an accident had happened ; while others conjectured that he had turned the carrier pigeons adrift and — gone to bed. When the returns for Apiti aud Pemberton came in to- dayd they gave Mr Macaitbur a clear majority of 3d over Mr Arkwright for the whole electorate. An impromptu meeting was held by a large party of his supporters, including several of the "opposition," at Hastie's where the health of the winning candidate was drunk in bumpers. In responding Mr Macarthur said he was proud of his victory, and now that the battle was over he was sure no bad feeling would remain. He had loyal supporters in Feildiug who had stuck to. him from the beginning, and he had opponents who had always been agaiust him, but he hoped by his actions in the coming sessions of Parliament even to wm his enemies to his side. Three cheers for Mr Macarthur terminated the proceedings. The following are the results for the whole Oolony :— Rangitikei — Macarthur, 983 ; Arkwright, 948.
