The "Republican importers are furious at the effects of the McKinley Act, and ii is exoected that the Republican candi* date* will suffer greatly at the next elections. London, October 30. Mr Gladstone has been presented with the freedom of the city of Edinburgh. In the course of a speech delivered during the ceremony, he said it was a suicidul dream to think of adopting the.policy of retaliation tt> th<» McKinley Act. . Tyser and Co. still hold possession of the New Zealand Shipping Company's books and documents, but the latter are allowed full access to them. The New Zealand Shipping Company are instituting proceedings against Tyser and Co. for mismanagement of their affairs, and will also sue for possession of the offices. In the Queen's Bench Division in Chambers to»day. Baron Hnddlestone made an order for Messrs Tyser and Co. to surrender the New Zealand Shipping Company's hooks and documents, but refused to make an order of ejectment against Tyser' 8 companies and. officers. The New Zealand Shipping Company hare declined the terms ol the Treasury for a renewal of the direct mail service to New Zealand, as they consider the amount insufficient. It is thought likely that Messrs Shaw, Sanlle and Albion Company will accept a renewal. Colonial stocks are reeovenng. Sir Gavin Daffy considers that Mr Balfour's Irish Land Purchase advances are unnecessary. Mr ParnelTs scheme, he considers, is a strange alternative and a serious mistake. Freeman's Journal accuses Sir Gavin Dnffy of seeking to outset Mr Parnell. Mr H. M. Stanley charges the Englishmen who were in command of his rear guard in the Emm Pasha Relief Expendition with barbarous neglect to dying natives, and states that each jealously prevented his subordinates from trying to keep straight. Major Barttelot, Mr Stanley alleges, was killed for ill-treating a chiefs wife. The" revelation has caused a great sensation in England, and Stanley is accused of maligning' the dead. The press generally condemns Stanley's inuendoes respecting the death of Major Barttellot, and demand that he should immediately ißsue his promised revelations, or otherwise his character will be dishonored. Lady Bosebery is recovering from her attack of tyyhoid fever. Mr*Duncan, of the Matrimonial News, who was charged with fraudulent bankruptcy, has been committed for trial. He has handed over a sum of £6000 to his creditors. Dr Koch, the German scientist, claims to have completed his cure for consumption. Zanzibar, October 80. The British troops have attacked and burnt Witu. Amsterdam, October 29. The Butch Parliament has declared King William 111. incapable of ruling and has invested the Council of State with regal powers.
