Our Wellington Letter

lOVB 6"VTO CORRESPONDENT.] Welwjjgton, October 23. If the good people of the Manawatu fancied that Wirth Bros. " got at them " •over their -Wild West Show, and showered <?urses down upon the heads of the proprietors of the circus they, no doubt, will feel happy when they know that those xjurses took effect,- for since the show arrived in. this city the wind has howled and the rain .has poured incessantly, so that the circus 'could only perform two nights out of the week, which would only about pay for expenses. Strange to say, the very day after the departure of the troupe the weather moderated. I have always opposed the idea that Wellington could "lick creation" at northerly and southerly "busters," but I must now confess that the zephyrs have been a trifle strong this week. To the casual observer it would appear that there was no strike in Wellington at the present time. The free laborers now walk to and from their work with perfect ' freedom, and the Takapuna has ceased to be a house of protection to the lambs who ' were threatened with death if they came xiearthe ravening wolves who, until lately, haunted the approach to the wharf. I noticed yesterday even some of the head nnion wharf laborers working with nonunion men on the wharf, which seems to indicate that the great effort of the maritime council has fizzled out. Unfortunately, however, some very deserving men have been thrown out of permanent positions through this ill-advised strike, and it is possible that it may be a long day before they get back again. Will the Trades and Labour Council provide for these men whilst out of work ? That is the vital question. (To be Continued.)
